Issue 9: [LISTEN] Starlight Racing's Jack Wolf On Authentic Being 'Horse of the Year' Candidate
By the time the Eclipse Awards — horse racing’s version of the Emmys — are announced on Thursday, Authentic, the likely winner for 2020 “Horse of the Year” and “Best Three-year-old Male,” will have already been retired for two months.
While Authentic deserves to be officially recognized for his historic achievements on the track, his future as a stallion has already been determined.
Put out to stud at Spendthrift Farms in November of 2020, Authentic will command a $75,000 breeding fee, where his only responsibility for the remainder of his days will be to try and sire a champion racehorse.
Starlight Racing’s founder Jack Wolf, who is part of the ownership group that sold Authentic’s breeding rights to Spendthrift Farms, talked to me about what Authentic meant to him, as well as the evolution of thoroughbred racing.

Very nice interview. I especially liked hearing about the organization formed to protect the horses. I also found that the different roles of people involved was fascinating: owner, jockey, etc.
This conversation was illuminating for one who is not a horse racing follower but a true animal lover. The horses inspire hope! The best conclusion!
As a casual fan of horse racing, I really enjoyed your interview with Jack Wolf, and learned things about the sport and the business of it too. The conversational tone of the podcast made for easy listening, as if two good acquaintances were just catching up with each other after some time....One can try to control all the factors of success; great breeding, training, jockey....and then LUCK might be the one variable that is not controllable that determines final success....Great listen!
